The Ateneo de Manila University Grade School began the Educational Software Modules for Grade School Araling Panlipunan and Filipino (ESMGS AP/Fil) Project in the first quarter of 2004. The project objective is to develop 32 curriculum-based, interactive, multimedia modules for middle school-16 for Araling Panlipunan and 16 for Filipino.
This demonstration session discusses the structure of the project team and the design and development process followed for each module. The software modules completed to date and the feedback from the teachers and the students who have used them are likewise presented.
The project team is headed by a project manager (PM) and includes two instructional designers (IDs) (one for each subject area), script writers (SWs), and a multimedia author (MMA). They are responsible for various aspects of the design process and must work closely together following a detailed protocol.
The design and development process is systematic. When a module is nearing completion, the MMA presents it before a group of AP or Filipino teachers. The module is revised according to the group's feedback. The module is then tested with the students to determine whether instructions, content, and interface are understandable. The module is revised again, if necessary.
Six modules have been completed to date-three for AP and three for Filipino. Ten others are in the implementation stage. The remaining modules are in the script writing stage.
The completed modules have been used in class. The feedback from the students and the teachers has been positive. A few technical shortcomings still have to be addressed. However, students generally found the modules engaging and informative.
