Freeware for Science Education
by Maria Lurenda Suplido
Faculty of Management & Development Studies and Office of Academic Support & Instructional Services, UP Open University

Freeware is a type of software that is distributed for free. Users can distribute the software to others but this may not be sold for profit. The author retains copyright, and the user may not change the software's code.

Freeware is a boon to educational institutions, allowing the latter to avail themselves of multimedia materials at no cost.

Prime examples of freeware that can be used to teach science (general science, biology, chemistry, physics) in elementary and high school levels will be shown in this demonstration. The more important issues of pedagogy and the teacher's role in the selection and appropriate utilization of freeware, including how these can be integrated with other classroom activities, are discussed.
